John Guthrie’s latest black drawings encapsulate the breadth of Guthrie's visual lexicon, combining linear geometries with the fluidity of organic curves and circular patterning. Each work hums to its own rhythm, constantly shifting between light and shadow; inside and outside; positive and negative.
Though elusive, Guthrie’s drawings are intuitively grounded in symbols found throughout early and modern art. Each form displays a unique gesture and set of adornments, carrying a spiritual presence akin to a talisman or fetish object. Whether seen as figures, silhouettes, or characters, these compelling works conjure a significance felt beyond words.
